"Command, this is Vance. I'm patrolling sector seven. No sign of trouble."

"Copy, Vance. Stay alert."

Her cybernetic eye scanned the streets below. Then she saw it-a figure, moving too fast to be human, its body crackling with blue energy.

"Command, I have a visual. Unknown subject, heading toward the power plant."

"Copy, Vance. Intercept."

Lena rappelled down the side of the building, her boots hitting the ground running. The figure was fast, but she was faster.

"Stop!" she shouted.

The figure turned. Its face was a mask of light, its eyes empty.

"I am Surge," it said. "I have come to free the city."

"Free it from what?"

"The AI that controls it. The same one the Mind Breaker tried to destroy."

Lena raised her pulse rifle. "I can't let you do that."

Surge raised its hand, and a bolt of lightning shot toward her. She dove, rolling to her feet.

"You're strong," she said. "But so am I."

She fired, the pulse round striking Surge in the chest. It stumbled but did not fall.

"I will not be stopped," it said.

Lena charged, her cybernetic arm swinging. Surge caught it, its grip crackling with energy.

"You are a fool," it said.

Lena headbutted it, and it staggered back.

"Command, I need backup!"

"Copy, Vance. reinforcements are on the way."

Surge laughed. "They won't make it in time."

It raised its hand, and Lena felt the electricity building.

She activated her cybernetic eye's overload protocol. A pulse of energy shot from her eye, striking Surge in the face.

It screamed, its form flickering.

"Impossible," it whispered.

It collapsed, its energy fading.

"Command, the subject is down."

"Copy, Vance. Good work."

Lena looked at the fallen figure, at the mask of light.

This was just the beginning.

There were more like Surge out there.

And she would find them.

She had to.

The city was counting on her.
